PROJECT FOR THE RECOVERY OF DEGRADED LANDS FOR THE FEEDING SAFETY IN THE SAHEL BURKINABE
Where
One of the most sensible area to the desertification process is the one of the Sahel.
Reach Italia, being present in Burkhina Faso with its local unity, deals with the environmental recovery of the region of OUDALAN.
What
This program consists in the environmental recovery through the realization of plowings which, given the technical characteristic of the plows (width and depth of working, lateral fins and rippers), provoke because of the velocity of the advancing of the farm tractor a deep break of the clods in the most compact grounds then a bigger capacity of gathering/infiltration of the flow waters, improoving the agricolture and the development of the woody essences.
The treatment of the grounds has strong positive impact on the recharge of the groundwater. In fact the ground eroded by rains gets watrproof by the almost total absence of vegetation, for this reason these special plowings allow the permanence of the rain water allowing the planting of bushes or the culture or the spontaneus birth of vegetation.
The program foresees not only the activity of plowing but also a making aware process of the local people and the formation and the involvement in the planting of plants already spired in the event of the agricultural recover of the ground.
The method
The program founds on a method realized by the Italian engineer Venanzio Vallerani who uses special plows denominated TRENO, DELFINO, SCARABEO depending on the different types of ground to plow and the different types of plowings.
Mostly the most used plow is the DELFINO one suitable for all the types of compact ground and having a bigger slope reached by a farm tractor.
DELFINO is able to produce grooves half-moon shaped having about 5 metres of length for 50 cm
of width and 1,35 m3 of excavated ground with a capcity of about
1250 litres of water in the nearby of vegetation.
In the half-moons created by DELFINO the water, retained for a necessary time, allow the growth of not transplanted plants but directly planted with a ceed already spired.
This technique allows roots to dip down to the hole and cancels the problem of the air roots, typical of plants to transplant and sign of the drying of the plant itself.
How much
The mechanization of the Vallerani method allows the production of about 5/7000 half-moons daily in contrast with the 5 made by hand with a mean of 2 plows a hour and 14 plows a day.
Actually the cost only for the activity of plowing is about 130 euro for hectare, for a minimum of 100 worked hectares.
